Seagrass meadows as previously unrecognized reservoirs of micronutrients for human health
Coral reef fisheries sustain human health by providing a vital source of protein and micronutrients, but contributions from surrounding habitats remain unexplored. We show that fishes associated with seagrasses can provision equivalent or greater micronutrients than those from coral reefs, highlighting the potentially important role of seagrass meadows in combating human malnutrition.

At least a fivefold gap in effective global marine protection
Conservation goals are often expressed in terms of total area, but rarely consider the ecological outcomes of protection. Using a global survey of reef fishes, we show that current levels of protection and enforcement rarely lead to substantial recovery of fish biomass, suggesting that only a small fraction of the world’s oceans is effectively conserved–falling well short of current estimates and of global targets, such as the “30-by-30” initiative.
